Ophelia is usually shown as a passive victim of a patriarchal world. This Ophelia is alive in her underwater element. She may have plunged willingly into the water, preferring to reconnect with the wild natural world, than live above on a land being destroyed by man. She has just let go of a posy of wild flowers, which are floating up to the surface. Cadmium orange and pthalmo green show the land flowers and deep water to be two different and separating worlds.  Seabass swim around her, unafraid, curious, like us.

I have exhibited in London, Brighton, York, Edinburgh, Mallorca.

I use my own technique, developed from the Japanese Gyotaku tradition of the 18th Century, which was a way of recording fsh catches.  Instead of using ink and rice paper, I work with gesso, oils, glazes and pigment on canvas.

I begin a piece on location. I have travelled mainly to South America (Cuba, Colombia, Uruguay) to work with local fishermen. But I also enjoy working around Britain and, indeed, wherever I happen to be.  I find amazing fish from all over the world in Brixton Market, London. Pictures are finished in my Studios in London and Oxfordshire.

Before becoming a painter, I worked for many years as a freelance journalist, covering human interest features around the world. I pursue that curiosity in my art. We are emptying the oceans and killing out fish species before we know anything much about them: how they communicate, how they create and use colour, where they go, how they reproduce. I am finding out so much as I work with these mysterious creatures. I channel my research into my work. Each piece has its own story to tell.  When you buy a work from me, you will also be given that story.
