Leith Community Pottery CIC is a social enterprise which offers free and subsidised access to courses and workshops to those living with poor mental health. Andy Lang, The Potter of Leith, set the business up in August 2019. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Ceramics and produces reduction fired stoneware pottery. He has been teaching in Community Education for 35 years, the past 23 at Leith Academy, Edinburgh.

Sales of pottery contribute towards the pottery’s ability to offer free access to tuition to the target group. The workshop, at Leith Business Centre, is entirely fitted out with reclaimed wood and furbishments retrieved from skips and other throw-aways. Most of the glazes used are based on wood ash, harvested from the oil drum fires at The Pitt Street Market, pizza ovens, wood burning stoves and incinerated scrap gleaned from local trades.

Shipping Policy

We try to dispatch your order as soon as possible.  However, please bear in mind that we have a considerable range and each piece is individually made, and decorated by hand.  We do not always have every item in stock, and may have to make goods for your order.  If you need a piece urgently, please let us know, and we will do our best to get it to you, or offer you an alternative. Your order will only be sent when complete.  If you require it to be split in order to get part sooner, then an extra carriage charge will be incurred. Alternatively, you can collect your order directly from the pottery at Leith Business Centre. Select this option from the ‘Delivery Option’ box at the checkout. Prices for shipping are based on the order value. Our current carriage charges are stated on the website.

Refund Policy

The Potter of Leith is completely dedicated to having satisfied customers. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, please contact us. We abide by ‘The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000’ (for EU customers only) details of which can be found here. Glaze and Colour Quality We produce high quality, reduction fired stoneware pottery and would draw attention to certain facts concerning colour and finish on goods supplied. Glazes used are custom made at the pottery from raw materials sourced from a variety of suppliers. As such, there may be slight disparities in the results obtained from their use and therefore colours depicted on line are representations only and may be subject to variation. All wares are oven proof, dishwasher proof and food-safe unless otherwise stated. Colour Variations can occur due to the mineral content of glaze materials used, the nature of glazes used, flame exposure in the kiln and atmospheric conditions therein. These are normal and to be expected in high temperature reduction firing. They are not regarded as a flaw in the ware. Runs and Dribbles are a normal feature of the types of glazes used by The Potter of Leith and are to be expected, indeed, relished. Iron spots – A naturally occurring spot of iron may rise to the surface of the glaze during firing, and can appear anywhere.  These are not a flaw. Pinholes – These are very small holes in the fired glaze surface penetrating down to the body below.  It is rare for there to be more than just one or two in any piece.  This does not affect the clay body itself and in no way impairs the function of the piece. Dimensions/Volumes are approximate due to slight variations in the shrinkage percentages in clay bodies used. Volumes are not intended to conform to any industry or legaslitive standards of weights and measures.

Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

BREAKAGE OR LOSS In the rare event of loss or damage in transit, we take responsibility to make good the loss.  If possible, please supply us with a digital photograph of any damages and the packaging to substantiate your claim. In exceptional circumstances, we may ask you to return broken pieces. RETURNS POLICY If for any reason you are not entirely satisfied with your order, and the goods are returned to us, undamaged, we will fully refund your purchase transaction.  Please note that we cannot be responsible for returned goods that are damaged in transit.  Should the goods be of good quality, all carriage charges will be the responsibility of the purchaser.  If the goods are found to be faulty, we offer to replace or refund the faulty item at no additional charge to the customer.  We will only refund carriage costs at cheapest over-the-counter Post Office rates. Bespoke pieces are only ever made on a ‘Run of Kiln’ basis, due to cost and fuel efficiency constraints. Slight imperfections in the glaze are considered acceptable. We are unable to offer a refund or replacement, unless the item is faulty. CANCELLATION As a consumer you have the right to cancel your order within 7 working days of receipt of goods and receive a full refund including delivery charge. In order to claim a refund you must notify us in writing within this ‘cooling off’ period. Refunds will be made as soon as possible, but within 30 days. Goods must be returned to us in the original packaging and arrive undamaged within 10 working days from informing us of cancellation. Please note that items are returned at your own cost and we recommend the use of a registered postal service for your protection. We reserve the right to make changes to our Trading Terms and Conditions.
