Acrylic & ink on heavyweight paper

About the artwork:
Desi is part of the collection “Metal & Dust”. The A3 pieces in Metal & Dust Collection are representations of the composition of the body, carbon matter memory, structure, and form – strong but changeable, all of the same materials but differently composed, complex and vulnerable; it is also a reflection of the stages of womanhood and sexuality from the intensity of youth and initial overwhelming passion, through to the indulgence and sumptuousness of growing into love like the stepping into the light, and finally the freedom of self-realisation and acceptance of your body and your innate sexuality. All stages are visceral and delicate. Each has its own personality, all hand-drawn in ink with acrylic textures added to breathe life into the bodies.
Desi is the people of the Indian subcontinent, meaning ‘land, country’ in Sanskrit. In Romanian, it translates as ‘although’; in French, it translates as ‘desire’. She is captivating and she is content to travel. Is she land or body? A body can journey just like a land can.

About the artist:
I am a self-taught artist; I first began drawing as a self-therapy and reconciliation of myself after undergoing a double mastectomy three years ago which changed how I see the body and what female sexuality is. I tend to be instinctive when I create, and I work quickly on most pieces – I have never been the most patient of creatives.
I am also a poet and many of my pieces begin in the written word and transform onto paper or canvas. Often these pieces will be accompanied by the original written piece that inspired them.
I use layered and textured acrylic to create a visceral quality to the works and to represent emotion, which I hope makes the eye linger and search out more detail – your eye becoming your fingertips and craving touch. It is always a journey every time I draw or paint a body it makes me hyper-aware of how the outside world categorises women’s body, as a commodity, as an object, and how social media and public platforms dictate what is and is not ‘woman’, but it is also a reconciliation between my gaze on my own changed form and that which I control with ink or paint.
My work has previously been displayed in Parallax AF, Plathoes Cave, WATWA Art Girl Rising and showcased at the MASA-UK Gallery.
