About the artwork:
Medusa had the power to turn men who dared gaze on her to stone, and instead of this being empowerment (owning the permission of looking) it was seen as monstrous, yet sculptors and vase-painters of the fifth century began to envisage her as being beautiful as well as terrifying.
Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale had to turn Hermione 'into stone' before her husband can acknowledge his own character's frailty and the impacts of his damning of her character.
Statues of marble and granite beautifully sculpted bodies that you cannot touch - the stone is buffed and polished, aching to be touched - but we cannot, and the idea that we respect instruction not to touch statues but find it harder to grasp when that stone is made flesh. I wanted to reflect on the idea of ownership of a body, of how the female body has been a commodity in so many ways, and the continual fight for the female form to be a woman’s own is still ongoing.
The use of sparseness creates a stark image on a marble-fluid background to give an illusion that you could touch the curves, to present the coolness of how a statue feels underhand, but prevent the voyeur access to that hard softness of marble, and make a 2-dimensional piece seem to be in movement and stillness at once; taking the traditional statue and transposing it with textured acrylic – large swept movements through the white paint creating the grooves in which gold is delicately veined. Texture not only adds depth to a piece and captures light and shadow but again almost begs to be touched. Once again refused. Once again the refusal is respected.
Modern, sleek, and captivating, this original hand-painted piece would look stunning on any wall, a strong piece creating a focal point in your room, adding luxury and intensity.
The style is contemporary, with nods to sculptural composition.
This canvas piece is hand-painted acrylic and ink over high quality 100% pure cotton medium grain canvas then stretched over spruce wood. The painting is white with gold acrylic in textured grooves and the body is black acrylic and ink – the photo shows the piece darker to allow the camera to pick up the textures within the piece however please note that this piece is indeed white.
Please note that this piece comes without an external frame – the piece can be hung as is (canvas on spruce wood) to continue its minimalist roots or alternatively contact your local framers to have the piece framed as desired. Please note the textured elements on the canvas are raise so depth of framing should you wish to frame it would need to be mindful of this.
Canvas is 1.5 inches deep

About the artist:
I am a self-taught artist, I first began drawing as a self-therapy and reconciliation of myself after undergoing a double mastectomy three years ago which changed how I see the body and what female sexuality is. I tend to be instinctive when I create and I work quickly on most pieces – I have never been the most patient of creatives.
I am also a poet and many of my pieces begin in the written word and transform onto paper or canvas. Often these pieces will be accompanied by the original written piece that inspired them.
I use layered and textured acrylic to create a visceral quality to the works and to represent emotion, which I hope makes the eye linger and search out more detail – your eye becoming your fingertips and craving touch. It is always a journey every time I draw or paint a body it makes me hyper-aware of how the outside world categorises women’s body, as a commodity, as an object, and how social media and public platforms dictate what is and is not ‘woman’, but it is also a reconciliation between my gaze on my own changed form and that which I control with ink or paint.
My work has previously been displayed in Parallax AF, Plathoes Cave, WATWA Art Girl Rising and showcased at the MASA-UK Gallery.
