Jocasta Shakespeare
I have exhibited in London, Brighton, York, Edinburgh, Mallorca.
I use my own technique, developed from the Japanese Gyotaku tradition of the 18th Century, which was a way of recording fsh catches. Instead of using ink and rice paper, I work with gesso, oils, glazes and pigment on canvas.
I begin a piece on location. I have travelled mainly to South America (Cuba, Colombia, Uruguay) to work with local fishermen. But I also enjoy working around Britain and, indeed, wherever I happen to be. I find amazing fish from all over the world in Brixton Market, London. Pictures are finished in my Studios in London and Oxfordshire.
Before becoming a painter, I worked for many years as a freelance journalist, covering human interest features around the world. I pursue that curiosity in my art. We are emptying the oceans and killing out fish species before we know anything much about them: how they communicate, how they create and use colour, where they go, how they reproduce. I am finding out so much as I work with these mysterious creatures. I channel my research into my work. Each piece has its own story to tell. When you buy a work from me, you will also be given that story.
